Purl Stitch Through the Back Loop (p tbl)

purl through the back loop stitch

This stitch is completed in a similar fashion to the purl stitch except instead of purling with the working yarn loose underneath the wrap, you make an e-wrap of the working yarn underneath the current wrap. This is the type of purl stitch used in the purl bind-off method.

This stitch will look just like the e-wrap stitch on the back of the fabric and the front of the fabric will look just like it does on the back of the fabric of the e-wrap stitch.

Two different methods for creating a purl tbl stitch are presented below. The result is the same; use whichever one is easier for you.

  1. Pick up the wrap on the peg with your knitting tool and hold.

  2. With your working yarn, e-wrap the peg.

  3. Place the wrap you are holding with your knitting tool back on the peg so that it is on top of the e-wrap you just made.

  4. Place the knitting tool above the top wrap in the groove of the peg.

  5. Turn and slide the knitting tool down into the grove under the top wrap.

  6. Grab the bottom wrap by circling around the outside and then around its bottom catching it as you slide the knitting tool up the groove of the peg.

  7. Grab the wrap that you have brought to the top with your fingers and pull up to take both wraps off of the peg.

  8. Place the wrap you are holding in your fingers on the peg.

  9. Pull the working yarn to tighten the wrap on the peg if necessary.
  1. Bring the working yarn in front of the peg, below the existing wrap.

  2. Place the knitting tool above the wrap in the groove of the peg.

  3. Turn and slide the knitting tool down into the groove under the wrap.

  4. Grab the working yarn with the knitting tool by circling around the outside and then and then around the bottom catching the working yarn as you slide the knitting tool up the groove of the peg. This will create a new wrap.

  5. Grab this new wrap with your fingers and pull up taking the wrap off of the peg.

  6. Twist the loop you are holding in your fingers and place it on the peg.

  7. Pull the working yarn to tighten the wrap on the peg if necessary.
